Most babies, regardless of ethnic group, suffer from diaper rash at some point in their first three years. Diaper rash on African-American baby is a little more common because their skin is moist and very soft. Unfortunately, there are babies that seem more prone to diaper rash. On African-American baby or any baby that is prone to diaper rash, the best course of action is taking preventative measures.

Change your baby’s diaper frequently to keep him/her as dry as possible. After every diaper change, always rinse your baby’s skin using a lot of warm water. Avoid diaper wipes, as they tend to irritate some baby’s skin. Use mild baby soap, but only after a bowel movement. When at all possible, take your baby’s diaper off to expose their skin to air. As Yeast infections like warm, moist areas, air-drying your baby’s skin reduces this risk. If your baby does have a bright red rash and you suspect a yeast infection, try a non-prescription cream along with air exposure and warm water cleaning. Always consult your baby’s doctor if their rash does not show an improvement. Treatment for a diaper rash on an African-American baby is the same. Sometimes the diaper is the problem; so try a different kind of diaper or a disposable diaper that is perfume free.

Diaper rash on an African-American baby or any infant, is very upsetting for the parents and uncomfortable for the baby. If your little one ends up with a stubborn diaper rash and you are concerned, have your baby’s doctor examine your child. Definitely contact the doctor for any of the following:

  • Your baby is looking or acting unusual or sick
  • A fever and large area of red skin
  • The infants skin is very red and peels in sheets
  • A cluster of tiny pimples or blisters
  • The diaper rash bleeds or is raw
  • Open sores, pimples, yellow crusts etc.
  • The rash has spread beyond their diaper area

Anytime you feel concerned, have your baby’s rash examined by the baby’s doctor, for your own peace of mind.
